N-Acetyl L-Tyrosine (NALT) Overview

NALT is a very handy supplement. It improves your mood, gives you more energy, helps your motivation and enables you to handle physical stressors more effectively. (Nootriment n.d.) You naturally synthesize NALT from L-Phenylalanine (also a component of WHOF) but the pathway for Phenylalanine to cross the brain-blood barrier is also used by tryptophan (Serotonin system – keeps you happy and content) and nitric oxide. A Phenylalanine only approach to boosting the dopamine system is ill advised.

How NALT works

NALT is synthesized into L-DOPA. L-DOPA is synthesized into Dopamine. Dopamine is synthesized into Norepinephrine.

Dopamine is the primary neurotransmitter in your body’s reward circuitry. When you do some action your body releases dopamine and you feel positive about the accomplishment. Different people do this at different rates and for different things. If you run low on Dopamine or don’t perform actions that release dopamine you become depressed. Exercise releases dopamine (along with all sorts of other good things for your brain).

A quick discussion on the ugly side of Dopamine. If you have unhealthy habits that release Dopamine, for instance unhealthy gambling, WHOF will not help you. This is more of an adult human being problem than a supplement problem. But we advise against doing stupid things with or without our Supplement. Additionally, some drugs work by firing off a mad crazy release of dopamine. We also advise not taking WHOF and using Drugs. Synthetic neurotransmitters and brain function catalysts work at a very high cost – avoid brain related drugs (legal or not) if possible, with or without our supplement.

Norepinephrine – Keeps you awake and alert

The focus on Dopamine in WHOF was targeted toward another very useful neurotransmitter. Norepinephrine is released when you perceive a threat. Marines will recall the term “Chemical Cocktail” from their marksmanship classes referring to the body’s physiological reaction to combat. If you are going to be in high stress for a long period or stay awake for a long time you need Norepinephrine, the more for the longer you are exposed to stress or staying awake. Therefore, WHOF stacks both Phenylalanine and NALT, longer availability of Norepinephrine.

Norepinephrine is also critical in your mood and ability to concentrate. A lot of ADHD is caused by a lack of Norepinephrine. ADHD medications such as Ritalin and Adderall perform a similar function to the NALT -> Dopamine -> Norepinephrine chain. (Cassata n.d.) Remember the earlier warning about synthetic brain action. These ADHD medications are synthetic and biologically unregulated and will cause long term damage to the brain. WHOF does not have that issue, but natural biology cannot even begin to compete with the effects of synthetic drugs. On a related note: the developer of WHOF had a very bad reaction from one of these ADHD medications as a child causing severe painful nerve damage and spurring the research that developed WHOF.

Norepinephrine turns into Adrenaline

Let’s review: Phenylalanine -> NALT -> L-Dopa -> Dopamine -> Norepinephrine -> Epinephrine (Adrenaline)

That’s right NALT (and Phenylalanine) are needed for the synthesis of Adrenaline. Adrenaline is your peak “Fight or Flight” neurotransmitter. Adrenaline is very important for Warfighter and Athletes, to reach peak performance in either arena you absolutely need Adrenaline. (Swink 2010)

If you are anything like me you enjoy a good adrenaline rush.

Norepinephrine and Epinephrine Oxidation

Norepinephrine oxidizes when used. This Oxidized Norepinephrine is a “free radical” and will damage tissue in the brain it encounters. WHOF contains an antioxidant package to defeat this problem. The formulator of WHOF suspects a major element of Post-Traumatic Stress and general Combat Stress is related to this mechanism. We intend to research this further into the future. A bit of research has gone this direction. (Sherin and Nemeroff 2011) If using WHOF the (3) times a day schedule was no accident. The more stress you are under the more important this schedule becomes.

Will NALT Hurt me?

If you just went to this question, go back and read the rest of the article. The answer is: yes, if you are doing dumb things. WHOF was formulated to mitigate the negative effects of NALT and Phenylalanine.

Where do I get NALT?

We recommend taking NALT in a well formulated stack like our product Warheads on Foreheads. We used the Jarrow brand NALT during initial testing and recommend it if you are taking NALT outside of a nootropic stack – remember the antioxidants though.
